Robert (Bobby) Eugene Spencer passed away on May 13, 2019. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jerry Spencer, his sons, Robert Spencer (Cindy) and Richard Spencer (Wanda), his daughter, Rhonda Recupero (Tony), and grandchildren Eddie Williams (Dee), Laura Spencer-Duncan (Jaime), Felicia Peters (Toby), Paige Silva (Bryan), Rachel Spencer, Patrick Spencer, Courtney Serpekian (Vicken), Steven Recupero (Lauren), Amanda Kakert (Logan), Ashley Recupero and 14 great-grandchildren.

Bobby was born in Key West on Oct. 27, 1939 to parents William and Bernice Spencer, with siblings Sally and Billy (deceased). As a third-generation Conch, he was a dedicated Conchs fan and a natural on the water.

A commercial fisherman and boat builder, he owned and operated Spencer’s Boatyard on Stock Island for more than 40 years, crafting boats for people from coast to coast. It was his passion and more than just his occupation, as he made many friends in the industry and often spent his free time on the water bullying for lobster or fishing with his children and grandchildren.

As a local Pony League baseball coach, he was able to reach young men while coaching the sport he loved throughout the ’70s. Even after his coaching days, he continued to support the Key West High School Conchs baseball team as a passionate spectator.

He also enjoyed photography, often capturing moments of his life and portraits of his children through the lens of his camera.

Bobby never met a single stranger, treating everyone as a friend and with his generous soul, he believed in helping all.

He could be seen riding around town daily with his beloved dog, Bogie.

Bobby will be missed by all and remembered fondly as a giving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The family will hold a funeral service on Saturday, May 18, at 4 p.m. at the Church of God located at 1419 White St.

All arrangements are entrusted to Key West Mortuary and Cremation Center under the direction of Aaron J Castillo LFD and Bernard N Thurston Jr. CFO.
