FLORIDA KEYS — For a dinner-delivery change from pizza or Chinese, how about live lobster?

Nichols Seafood Suppliers now will deliver a tag of separated lobster tails or live whole lobster to residents in an 11-mile stretch from Conch Key to Lower Matecumbe Key.

“It’s a fairly small delivery area, but it’s working out pretty well,” said company founder Gary Nichols, whose family has been in the Florida Keys lobster and stone-crab business for 45 years.

“Every lobster we sell, we caught” on one of the firm’s three trap boats, he said. “It’s not coming out of a box from Colombia or someplace else.”

Minimum order for delivery is a bag of six lobster tails, at $8 per tail. Fresh live lobster are sold by weight at $9 a pound.

“We don’t use any preservatives and we don’t ‘glaze’ them by adding water that adds weight,” Nichols said. “It’s fresh lobster direct to you. All people have to do is call us or text us an address with the size of the order. Everybody we’ve dealt with has been honest and very nice.”

The firm’s delivery area runs from mile marker 63, near the Nichols Seafood base on Conch Key, north to marker 74, a zone where family members can drop off lobster while returning home to Lower Matecumbe.

“For larger amounts, we’ll make an exception,” Nichols said. “We get a lot of catering orders.”

Katie Nichols Ramirez handles most of the packing and delivery. Customers also can arrange to pick up fresh lobster.

Stone crab claws can be ordered when available, but this season’s harvest of claws has been on the low side, Nichols said.
