MARR-VELOUS PET RESCUE 'Yappy Hour,' an Upper Keys monthly event hosted by Marr-Velous Pet Rescue that seeks to connect foster dogs with a new family, typically attracts dozens of canine friends. Next up is a Nov. 14 gathering at Key Largo Fisheries Backyard Cafe.

UPPER KEYS — Pet lovers can get happy by getting yappy.

“It’s all about dog tales and cocktails,” said Ann Sanderlin of the Marr-Velous Pet Rescue organization, who described the group’s popular “Yappy Hour” social.

Pet owners and those who just need a doggie fix can stop by the 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, event at the Key Largo Fisheries Backyard Cafe on Ocean Bay Drive in Key Largo.

“Well-behaved pets are always welcome,” Sanderlin said. “Places that don’t normally allow dogs will let us in because it’s so much fun.”

The monthly Yappy Hour, now about a decade old, typically attracts from 50 to 100 pet owners, rescue adopters “and anybody who loves fur babies,” she said. “We have a lot of regulars.”

Yappy Hour rotates among welcoming Upper Keys bistros and cafes that offer a safe environment for the guest animals.

“We’ve only had one repeat location this year,” Sanderlin said.

Visiting pets must be leashed, socialized and vaccinated, organizers caution.

“Pets can’t cause disturbances for other guests, and owners have to be ready to pick up waste,” she said.

Marr-Velous Pet Rescue, a nonprofit founded by Joy Martin of Marr Properties, places its adoptable pets in foster homes until they can be connected with a suitable forever family.

“We try to have our foster pets at Yappy Hour but also have photos of pets,” Sanderlin said.

The Buzzard’s Roost on Key Largo’s Garden Cove Drive hosts Yappy Hour from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5.

Scheduling for Yappy Hour 2020 is underway.

From 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 8, Marr-Velous Pet Rescue staff and volunteers will have a “Home for the Holidays” adoption event with available pets greeting visitors at Divers Direct in Key Largo’s Waldorf Plaza.

Pet adopters and foster parents can attend a free monthly session with a dog trainer.

The 501(c)(3) no-kill charity does not have a shelter facility. It relies on its foster parents and raises funds “to provide immediate counsel, care, medical treatment, and shelter for animals in need until permanent adoption is achieved.”
